Apologetics 202: The Fine-Tuning Argument

Welcome to our in-depth course on the Fine-Tuning Argument! In this course, Dr. Craig explains what it means to say that the universe is finely-tuned for the existence of intelligent life, and he evaluates the three hypotheses that are proposed in scholarly literature to explain why or how the universe is this way: physical necessity, chance, and design.

We expect that this course will take 8-10 hours to complete, and we recommend that beginners take the Apologetics 101 course before starting here, although that is not required. Good luck!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon the completion of this course, you will be equipped to:

  • explain the idea of fine-tuning in the neutral way that experts use it, and provide numerous specific examples
  • respond to proponents of the idea that the fine-tuning is due to physical necessity
  • explain why a “Theory of Everything” will not adequately explain fine-tuning
  • provide a thoughtful response to the idea that chance, or the multiverse, accounts for fine-tuning
  • defend design as the most likely explanation for the fine-tuning of the universe
  • respond to the most common objections to the argument
